Brain Tumor Solutions
The brain is a very complex organ that controls every bodily function. It is round in shape with a white spongy texture and weighs approximately three pounds. It is composed of three sections; the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. Each section controls different bodily functions but they also work together.
The body is composed of millions of cells. When cells grow and multiple too rapidly it will form a mass called a tumor. It is not yet known how this process occurs in the human body, and brain tumors can occur at any age. A tumor can be classified as either benign or malignant. Benign tumors mean that there are no cancer cells within the tumor. Typically, benign tumors have clear borders and grow slowly. They can be removed with surgery and are likely to not reoccur. Malignant tumors mean that cancer cells are detected in the tumor. This means that the tumor will grow and spread at a more rapid rate.
Treatment for a brain tumor depends on a variety of factors. It depends on the size of the tumor, the location of the tumor and also the patient's current age and health. Brain tumors can be treated with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Surgery is the most often used treatment.
Gamma knife treatment is a relatively new alternative for the treatment of brain tumors. It is generally deemed safer than traditional surgery because there is no incision. Gamma-knife radio surgery uses imaging to locate the tumor in the brain and then direct radiation beams directly into the tumor. Unlike traditional surgery, if the tumor is located deep within the brain tissue, the surrounding areas will not be affected.
Gamma knife treatment is also the most recent and least invasive neurosurgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia occurs when this nerve becomes very inflamed and painful. It is often felt as excruciating facial pain that radiates from the jaw to the forehead. The pain can occur on either one side of the face or both.
